A pragmatic analysis of politeness strategies in Mulan movie

Pragmatics deals with language use in the context that relates to speech acts' meaning. Politeness strategies and politeness principles, as manifestation of pragmatics, are two determining communication factors both speaker hearer. This qualitative study was intended analyze used by main character Mulan her family. The data were collected using observation checklist adapted from Brown Levinson (1987) framework for strategies. findings showed all Levinson’s found Mulan’s other characters’ utterances movie. most frequently strategy positive politeness, which occur four times Bald-on record negative second movie three occurrences each. While off-record don’t do FTA occurred twice once, respectively. result pragmatic analysis influenced determined cultural background.
